Lions Mane (Pekepeke-kiore) Home Grow kit Instructions

🌿 Pekepeke-kiore Mushroom Grow Kit
Instructions – Fully Colonized Bag (Ready to Fruit)
Hericium novae-zealandiae – New Zealand’s native Lion’s Mane

🌱 Welcome!

Kia ora! Your Pekepeke-kiore kit is fully colonized and ready to grow. With just a few simple steps, you’ll be harvesting this rare and delicious rākau-like mushroom in your own home.

What’s Included:

  • Fully colonized Pekepeke-kiore grow bag
  • This instruction sheet
  • Clear plastic bin with lid big enough to contain the bag in the back 1/3. (Not supplied)

✂️ Step 1: Cut to Begin

  • Make a 5 cm cut on the line drawn onto the bag using clean scissors or a knife.
  • Do not remove the whole bag.
  • Place to kit into the back 1/3 of the plastic bin and put the lid on leaving a 8cm to 10cm gap in the lid for the kit to breath.

🌤️ Step 2: Find the Right Location

  • Place the bin in a room with bright, indirect light (like near a window or in a well-lit kitchen).
  • Avoid direct sun and strong drafts.
  • Best temperature: 16–22°C – cooler is better for Pekepeke-kiore.

💧 Step 3: Mist & Humidify

  • Mist the cut area 2–3 times daily using clean water through the opening in the lid.
  • Keep the surface moist but not soaked.

⏱️ Step 4: Growth & Harvest

  • Look for soft white spines or tufts within 14–24 days.
  • These will grow into shaggy, coral-like clusters.
  • Harvest when spines are 1–2 cm long and the mushroom is still white (before yellowing).
  • Twist off gently or cut at the base.

🔁 Step 5: Keep Growing

  • After harvest, continue misting daily.
  • Allow the bag to rest for 14–24 days.
  • Expect 2–3 flushes from one bag, with proper care.

⚠️ Tips & Troubleshooting

  • No pins? Mist more and check humidity levels.
  • Browning or drying? Likely too dry—add a tent and increase misting.
  • White fuzz = good. Green, black, or foul smells = contamination (discard if needed).

🍽️ Kai Tip:

Pekepeke-kiore has a mild, seafood-like flavour. Slice and sauté with garlic and butter, or use in risotto, tacos, or as a vegan scallop!
